A scroll compressor has one fixed scroll which remains stationary and another moving or orbiting scroll that rotates through the use of a swing link. These are used for a variety of applications, but they are most commonly found in small HVAC systems. In these systems, scroll compressors are responsible for drawing in and compressing the refrigerant before it is sent to the condenser coil and into your home. Due to the unique design of its discharge port, the scroll compressor can compress more air or gas with a relatively lower consumption of power. 

In an Open Type Compressor, the motor and the compressor housing are mounted separately. Because the open compressor lacks a seal around it, there is risk of refrigerant leakage. The advantages are that the compressor components are easily accessible for maintenance and the costs of a shell can be avoided.
